Stop caste-based reservations!

What's starting in the form of student revolts at some locations in the country is a clear indication of the things that are going to come - that of caste per se coming to the foreground of our society. Which is why I say: Stop reservations based on caste.

It's always been a mixed feeling for me until now. Being a guy who doesn't come under any reservation category, I've suffered. And seen people getting far less marks getting into a medical college even as I was refused entry despite being one of the district toppers et al in the medical entrance examination. It was painful. Totally. But then, life has probably been like this for years for people who are under-privileged, the ones who've been barred by 'us', and they certainly deserve to enjoy the fruits of democracy as much as we do.

Govt. certainly has to do something about those people. But not reservations based on caste. It just doesn't surve the purpose. As far as my experience goes, most of these reservations are used by city-bred students who have education similar to that of the other non-reservation class students. Not only that, they most likely have at least one of their parents working in Govt. institutions, and more often than not, their parents would've enjoyed reservations when they grew up. Providing reservations to these people is nothing but punishing meritocracy. And why on earth would someone be given reservations in PG courses after enjoying the same from schools to undergraduate courses? It beats me alright.

I don't really have a solution to this problem, but I know caste based reservations are not the way to go. And I think it is totally dumb to reserve seats in post graduation institutions and the ones like the IITs and IIMs. These institutions operate on the basis of input-control - they are regarded the best because they choose the best and not because they mold students into the best. Allowing non-merit based entry into these institutions is tantamount to cheating people who place trust on these institutions.

The other problem with caste-based reservations is there is a mighty good chance that students of people who got benifited decades back again get the same benefit, which is unacceptable by any stretch of imagination.

However, the biggest problem is the division it would cause in the society. It's not uncommon to see students forming groups based on caste inside colleges. It's sad but it happens even in RECs, IITs and the IIMs. The last thing we need is such segregations happening more explicitly and in large scale everywhere. It would be a precursor to a society that identifies itself primarily by caste. I'm not sure if anybody wants it.

To sum up:

1) Stop caste-based reservations in post graduation courses and IITs/IIMs.
2) Govt. should not provide reservations to students whose parents got benefited through an earlier generation of reservations.
3) I don't think reservations based on economic status is impossible. It may not be feasible in the near future, but it is something that can truly be aspired for in the long term (10-20 years?), instead of plugging in an ill-planned so-called solution in the name of reservtions based on caste.

I might be ignorant, or I might've been naive and didn't realize that it happened. Can you give me some example? Looks like you are from an IIM!

Politics ...politics..and politics... The words have been heard so many times.. the economic demarcation implies - rich controls or has a say in their policies - they dont care who is the ruler - money can eventually buy most of the things - the middle class dont wont - for they r too much thrown apart by each policy of any government - and the only way to attract the poor is to tell them that the rulers care for them - and a v high majority of the poor arent from the so-called upper caste. the poors vote in huge numbers.

and remember - this problem isnt there just in India .. a sort of similar problem exists in colleges in usa as well. Many collleges of late boast in their advertisement "We've got the highest afro-amru population in usa" ... in usa it is races ... and again the answers are along the same lines of politics

if so many ppl oppose it - an equal number will demand it.. which side should the pendulum swing ?

Hey Govar,

My take on the issue is that caste-based reservation should be prevalent upto the stage a person completes his primary education. From there onwards, it should be purely merit based. This way, the underprivileged get their chance at being educated, and what they do with the basic education is purely based on how much they want to make with it.

What say Govar???

Cheers..........Jam

@Manoj: Well Manoj, it sure wasn't a figment of my imagination. There were people in my own batch who had no qualms admitting that they would move only with people who came without the help of reservations. And I know people (ofcourse, won't take names here... we can speak one-on-one) who would stay in rooms/form academic groups only with people who came without reservations. It's sad but I guess truth always is.

@Jam: True machi, guess u put it much more succintly that i did.

@Anon: Considering diversity in US, it's certainly not surprising, and we shoould remember that US has reached here after decades of race based struggles.

Guys, let us start a revolution. Let there be 100% Reservations! Let there be a new parallel education / job system, where the students / workers, management and even the friggin sweepers are appointed with reservations. And let there be 0% reservations in all the other institutions.

The time the OBC etc is born, he will have a certain admission into the reservation education system. He can study till whatever time he wants to. The teachers too are 100% from the reservation cadre. The reservation student after completion of his studies, will have an assured job in the Government. After all, didn't Nehru say that another purpose of the Public Sector was to generate employment?

Gover ,
I agree 100% with you. This is a real curse of our political and educational system. What is the actual logic behind it . Actually there is no need for any reservation at all. After all we have given it for more than fifty years.Should they enjoy it for generations.Should we suffer the faults some of our forefathers have done. This is not justice .Actually a neo-castsystem is prevailing now. Some people with birth are considered to be more privilaged than others.Only on the basis of birth they are given many considerations and are supported in every walks of life. This will never help in irradicating the illeffects of caste system. The creators of our constitution should not have thought about such a situation. They intended this to be continued only for a fixed period of time.Even the supreme court has said that it is high time that we stoped these reservations . But the political parties are playing minority appeasement cards .What does matter to them is their minority votebank. Now I think that this could only be stopped by a real a revolution. The new generation should think about it.I would like to ask all those youngsters of rising India.Whether u be of any caste or relegion just ask your heart and tell me that "Is this justice?"

I too believe that no reservation should to be the kids of those who have benefited from it.
Rather than increasing the reservation quotas in IITs/IIMs,the government should try to provide the elementary education. That would be a good bet i guess.

@Anonymous 1: Dude, nobody cares about an anonymous comment. You havent made any point or a rational argument. Pouring out and abusing doesn't really amount an argument. If you support reservations, fine, but argue with solid basis - what's the REAL benefit etc.

@Helpless Brahmin: Dude, most of the alumni who passed out of IIMs are working in companies - and hence can't support. The current students can, but they are all doing summer projects and are spread out in different cities and even towns collectin data. So there is no single point where we can converge and organize something. I except something from the IIMs' side after the campus reopens - which would happen in 2 weeks.
