Film lovers in Chennai, listen up!

My brief struggle to find a decent movie club in Chennai that operates in weekends has come to an end, at last.

Firstly, there is a club, a rather famous one, that goes by the name "Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) Chennai" that regularly shows very good quality foreign language movies. But, unfortunately, most of the movies are screened during weekdays at 6.30 pm, which shuts down any chance if you are into office employment.

Then there were several clubs that weren't functioning. But I also found another functioning club that shows movies in the weekends. It goes by the name "Tamilnadu Thiraippada Iyakkam" (Chennai film society, roughly). The best part is that they show movies in the ultra-famed Satyam Theatre, and, hold your breath... the yearly membership fee is 400 Rs. They promise to show at least about 50 rare foreign language (mostly non-English) movies, which works out to Rs. 8 for a weekend movie in an awesome theatre. A great deal, even if you don't have much of interest in movies and you manage to see just 25% of the movies.

I was terribly surprised not to find any information about this place on the web. Even more so coz the deal is so great I found at least 4 friends who were immediately interested after I told them about this. So here goes the details, for the benefit of people Googling for the same:

Address:
TamilNadu Thiraippada Iyakkam (Chennai film society, roughly),
348, TTK Road, Royapettah, Near Music Academy, Chennai-600014.
Email: ttichennai@yahoo.com

Buzz me for the name and phone number, if you need them.

Yeah, if and when I plan to settle down in Bangalore. :-P

More seriously, it has to be easier in Bangalore machan... the crowd is pretty cosmo there and I expect more movie fanatics there compared to chennai. Volumes might make your job very simple.

ahoy Govar! Long time! :) I am surprised you havernt heard of this before..it is quite well known in chennai actually..I thought I could join it but job made me come to Bangalore...and I lost interest...but will look arnd in bangalore if there is a simila rthing..I guess it would be there...though not for the 'cosmo' factor..you should see the 'threatre' scenario here...most of the plays I went to were so amateurish that it made the plays I was involved in school Ibsensque..

Yeah long time dude. :) Quite known? Rajesh gave me heads up abt the other club but i had to dig out this one... through some defunct clubs. Anyway, maybe cosmopolitan and art are two different things after all!

Thanks for the info, but let me tell you what might happen now.

Hundreds of movie-buffs will flock and register themselves.

Satyam possibly can't handle the crowd.

So, the venue will be shifted, or equally bad, the price for membership might be raised.

:-)

That is the cost of spreading information, sometimes.

I appreciate your genuine intent though, and I am myself planning to register there, thanks to your tidbit.

Rajendran.

Rest assured that I thought abt that possibility before posting.

We are speaking about Mexican/Cuban and Russian etc movies made in 1960s and 1980s and at morning 9 o clock on the weekends. I double definitely would like to meet the people who'd make it there for this. And if they do come, they deserve every frame of it. :)

@Ranjhith: Ofcourse. I know that the film fest is on, but it looks out of bounds to office going audience... since it runs through the entire days in the week. And I hear being a member alone doesn't guarantee a seat in te auditorium. Will certainly catch up with all the movies offline though!

Hi Govar!

Chanced upon this blog post of yours thanks to a Google search... looks like am late here, considering the fact that this post has been made several months before, but just wondering - is this person (Mr.Rajendran of TTI) still reachable at the mentioned number? I tried calling this number today evening, but couldn't reach him at that point in time... is anyone you know a member of this film circle? I would really, really appreciate if you could direct me as to where i can get in touch with a group of people in Chennai who love 'so-called' obscure Italian & Polish cinema like myself.. been hunting for such folks for a long time now.. any info at all, pls drop a line at lifeiscatch22 at gmail dot com .. thanks a million!
